Ford 8n backfires under load, Dec 19, 2013 · Hey guys, I have a Ford 8N that I have been fighting with for the past 4 to 5 months. 1952 8n. It up and put a new carb onit and started. It starts very hard, takes 30 seconds of grinding the starter before she slowly pops off. Pulling out the choke may prolong the rough running but the tractor won't be able to move & certainly can't take a load. I did some Googleing and read the articles at "My Ford Tractors. Once she starts, sometimes she runs great, but most times she will backfire, sputter & miss. But once I drive it, and it needs some power, it starts to miss and backfires and totally sapped of power. Under heavier load, like driving uphill or when the brush hog hits heavy weeds, it backfires quite frequently ~ 3-10 times or more in 15 seconds. Leaner, less dense mixtures are actually harder to ignite, so you typically see ignition misfires more at idle and low load than you do under heavy load.
